Red Rising

Darrow au Andromedus is really Darrow, a Red helium-3 miner from the underground mines of Mars, secretly transformed through surgical "carving" by the Sons of Ares to infiltrate Gold society after the Society publicly hanged his wife, Eo, for singing a protest song. Eo's death is the spark that drives Darrow's entire mission: to bring down the color-coded caste system from within.

After training with the Sons of Ares (guided by Dancer, Mickey, Harmony, and Matteo), Darrow enters Mars's Institute under his false Gold identity and is placed in House Mars, where he bonds with Cassius, whose younger brother Julian Darrow is forced to kill during the lethal "Passage" trial — a secret Cassius does not yet know. Darrow also meets Sevro, a small but vicious low-scorer who becomes his most loyal friend, and the son of Proctor Fitchner. During the war-games phase in Valles Marineris, Darrow rises to become a feared and skilled leader nicknamed "Reaper," building an army by conquering and freeing enslaved rival Houses.

Key relationships and revelations from the book: Darrow discovers that Titus, a brutal rival, is secretly another "carved" Red and Sons of Ares agent, but is forced to have him executed to protect his own cover — Cassius carries out the killing. Cassius eventually learns (via a stolen video) that Darrow killed his brother Julian, stabs Darrow and leaves him for dead, and seizes control of House Mars. Darrow is saved and nursed back to health by Virginia "Mustang" au Augustus, leader of rival House Minerva, and the two develop deep romantic feelings. Darrow later learns Virginia is the twin sister of Adrius au Augustus ("the Jackal"), the ArchGovernor's cruel, calculating son and Darrow's fiercest rival — but Virginia proves her loyalty by delivering her own brother into Darrow's hands, helping him win the Institute outright.

By the book's end, Darrow has: defeated and captured Adrius; usurped Cassius, who has sworn a blood feud against him; lost his friend Pax, killed protecting him from Adrius; and won the Institute's competition, earning the
